Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture is an autonomous prefecture in northeast China on the North Korean border. Around a third of its population is ethnically Korean whose families settled there over 150 years ago. For decades many schools taught in Yanbian Korean, a North Korean dialect, but in recent years some core subjects have shifted to Mandarin using national textbooks.
